From practice to performance, creativity takes center stage at Dunham where students develop artistic skill and discover new talents under the tutelage of accomplished instructors. Our fine arts faculty members, all professional working artists in the Baton Rouge community, have chosen to dedicate themselves to the education of talented young artists.

In an environment that embraces creativite expression, collaboration, and critical thinking, our outstanding theater, dance, visual arts, and vocal and instrumental music offerings inspire artistic expression, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Dance

Our dance program emphasises the development of the student dancer in technical skill, artistic creativity, and versatility within an environment that cultivates critical thought, creative process and physical self-expression. All students have opportunities to discover the joy of dance in our studios and on the stage.

 

Instrumental Music

From the band room to the stage, instrumental music is everywhere at Dunham. Students take part in a wide variety of musical activities ranging from introductory lessons in the Lower School and after school enrichments to advanced music training in the Middle School and Upper School. By participating in our band ensembles, students become proficient at reading music, playing instruments, and develop an appreciation for all genres of music.

 

Theatre

Our highly acclaimed theatre department provides opportunities for students to develop strong skills in collaboration, communication, and creative interpretation and expression through drama classes, as well as opportunities to participate in our annual theatre productions. From large-scale Broadway-caliber musicals on the main stage in the Brown-Holt Chapel Arts Center, as well as plays suited for smaller audiences in the Black Box Theatre, to classroom skits and performances in Christmas programs and chapel services, students grow in poise and confidence as they find their voices and develop a lifelong appreciation of theatre as an art form. Visual Arts

Art stays in full bloom in our sun-filled studios, where PreK3 through Upper School students develop skill and artistic expression under the tutelage of professional artists active in the Baton Rouge community. Instruction combines art history and hands-on studio experiences where creativity and critical thinking flourish. Students with an affinity for the visual arts may continue to build skill through our after-school enrichment offerings that support and enhance the day program. Outside of the art studio, opportunities abound to showcase work on campus and in local juried art exhibits.

 

Vocal Music

Vocal music instruction is part of our curriculum from PreK3 through Upper School. Students develop fundamental singing skills in Lower School and master healthy vocal techniques, musical notation, rhythm, and artful interpretation as they progress through Middle and Upper School. Students in all divisions have opportunities to showcase their talent in school and community performances, as well as in weekly chapel where we joyfully worship our Creator through beautiful choral music.
